Anishna What!? – Debbie Keeper (1995) – 3:10 min

This work is a tourist’s eye view of an excursion to a local historic site that depicts an 1850s representation of a native encampment. The found text for “Anishna What!?” reflects upon questions posed to the artist while she worked as a historic site interpreter at a Native encampment. While some of the tourist’s comments are genuine and sincere, others are illustrative of the misconceptions and stereotyped images of North American Indigenous peoples.

Half-breed Alice attempts to become queen and struggles with the Red Queen and the White Queen’s disapproval of her racial transgressions. A funny and quirky take on race, this piece stars Cosmosquaw as the Red Queen, Shawna Dempsey as the White Queen, and Thirza Cuthand as Alice.

More about Debbie Keeper

Debbie Keeper (Fisher River Cree Nation, MB) is a multidisciplinary artist. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours Degree from the University of Manitoba’s School of Art in 1996. Her various activities in the arts – theatre, photography and poetry – have been a strong influence in her process and approach to video. Her video works have been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally in both the broadcast medium and at various festivals and events.

More about the curator, Janell Henry

Janell Henry is an arts and cultural worker from Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation, Manitoba. Her love for art and technology started with music and expanded into a wider range of media production after getting involved in rez radio in her home community. She studied media production, writing, psychology and film at The Mid-Ocean School of Media Arts(2011-2012), University of Winnipeg (2012-2019) and National Screen Institute(2020).
